Introduction. In trying to answer the important and complex question of whether psychology is a science, we will first take a brief look at two major philosophical influences that help to create psychology- Empiricism and Positivism.

Dessa måste betraktas som två oberoende filosofier som skiljer sig från varandra. Discussion: Positivism resulted from foundationalism and empiricism; positivists value objectivity and proving or disproving hypotheses. British Empiricism is a practical philosophical movement which grew up, largely in Britain, during the Age of Reason and Age of Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th Century. The major figures in the movement were John Locke, George Berkeley and David Hume. positivist philosophy of Hume is particularly worth noting. David Hume draws the empiricist direction of Locke to its further radical conclusion. Sensualism remains the basis of Locke's psychological orientation of the theory of knowledge - the only indubitable basis of all knowledge is the primary level of immanent data of outer and inner sense. It does not, however, distinguish logical empiricism from logical positivism, and it is doubtful that any principled such boundary can be drawn along doctrinal or sociological lines (Uebel 2013). Usually when distinctions are drawn, ‘logical empiricism’ is the wider term. Logical positivism, later called logical empiricism, and both of which together are also known as neopositivism, was a movement in Western philosophy whose central thesis was the verification principle (also known as the verifiability criterion of meaning). Also called verificationism, this would-be theory of knowledge asserted that only statements verifiable through direct observation or logical proof are meaningful.

Positivism, empiricism and criminological theory 193 briefly review the origins of positivist criminology and explain the distinction between positivism and empiricism overlooked by the new criminology. Next we will show the immunity of this empiricism to the criticisms of the new criminology. Finally we will sketch in outline a

Positivism vs empiricism

Contemporary Educational Psychology, 25(4), 378-405.

A specific analysis is made of the empiricist view of information seeking and it is shown that empiricism may be regarded as a normative theory of information seeking and knowledge organisation. These two schools of thought, destined to develop into an almost worldwide and controversial movement, were built on the empiricism of Hume, on the positivism of Comte, and on the philosophy of science of Mach. Equally important influences came from several eminent figures who were at the same time scientists, mathematicians, and philosophers—G.F. Bernhard Riemann, the author of a non-Euclidean geometry; Hermann von Helmholtz, a pioneer in a broad range of scientific studies; Heinrich “Logical Positivism”—“Logical Empiricism”: What's in a Name?
